Whitehead <a href=\"https:\/\/heelstream.med.unc.edu\/hapi\/v1\/contents\/permalinks\/Gm9y8Y4B\/view\">Lecture and Awards program<\/a> was held virtually August 4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/ana-felix\/\">Ana Felix<\/a>, MBBCh, FAAN, assistant professor in the division of general medicine and clinical epidemiology, presented the annual lecture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStand up for what is just and fair. We are not all the same and our diversity will define our success. We are stronger together. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Clinical Sciences<\/strong>. This award was established in1985 to recognize exceptional teaching in the clinical curriculum. Faculty members were nominated and selected by the Class of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Klipstein also received the <strong>Best Application Phase Course Award<\/strong>, established in 1985 by the third-year class to recognize the clinical courses that most significantly contributed to the education of third-year medical students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54289\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams-300x124.png\" alt=\"Lu-Barber-Williams\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams-768x316.png 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams-600x247.png 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams-301x124.png 301w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/08\/Lu-Barber-Williams.png 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Edwin Lu, MD, John Barber, MD, and De-Vaughn &#8220;Monty&#8221; Williams, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/edwin-lu-md\/\">Edwin Lu<\/a>, MD, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/john-barber\/\">John Barber<\/a>, MD, and De-Vaughn Williams, MD, received <strong>Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Awards.<\/strong>\u00a0 These awards were created by the Class of 2000 to recognize residents and interns who contribute in an exemplary way to the education of medical students with their enthusiasm for teaching, including students in patient care decisions, and promoting involvement of students on the medical team.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7205\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 198px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/koyaljain.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7205\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/koyaljain.jpeg\" alt=\"koyal-jain\" width=\"188\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Koyal Jain, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/koyal-jain\/\">Koyal Jain<\/a>, MD, MPH, FASN, assistant professor in the division of nephrology and hypertension, director of the nephrology and hypertension training program, and director of undergraduate medical education for the Department of Medicine, received the <strong>Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Foundation Phase<\/strong>. The award was established in 1985 to recognize exemplary teaching in the pre-clinical curriculum. Faculty members are nominated, and the recipient is selected, by last year\u2019s second-year medical students.<\/p>\n<p>Jain also received the <strong>Foundation Phase Outstanding Director Teaching Award<\/strong>, which recognizes a faculty member from the Foundation Phase curriculum who has enhanced the education of second-year medical students by fostering a collegial environment that supports and encourages excellence.<\/p>\n<p>And, Jain received the <strong>Best Foundation Phase Block Award<\/strong>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/directory\/emily-moorefiled-phd\/\">Emily Moorefield<\/a>, PhD, in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, which recognizes a block from the Foundation Phase curriculum that contributed in an effective manner to the education of second-year medical students.<\/p>\n<p>A list of all award winners can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/wms\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/490\/2021\/08\/Whitehead_2021_Lecture_Program_FINAL_DRAFT_PROGRAM_Aug_3_2021_Updated_440_pm_FINAL92.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2021 Richard H.
