{"id":56620,"date":"2021-10-27T18:30:29","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T22:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/?p=56620"},"modified":"2023-06-06T18:15:58","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T22:15:58","slug":"project-embrace-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/project-embrace-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Project EMBRACE Returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Project EMBRACE, the acronym for \u201cEnding Medical Bias and Racism by Advocating for Change and Equity\u201d returned on October 8. \u00a0A collaboration between residents from the UNC Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, the concept began with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/melissa-wooten\/\">Melissa Wooten<\/a>, MD, MPH, who helped develop and lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/internal-medicine-residency-program-holds-noon-conference-series-embrace-addressing-medical-bias-and-racism-by-advocating-for-change-and-equity\/\">conference last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56621\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 659px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-56621\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten-300x193.png\" alt=\"melissa-wooten-EMBRACE-returns\" width=\"649\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten-600x386.png 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten-301x194.png 301w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/10\/melissa-wooten.png 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Melissa Wooten, MD, led an EMBRACE break-out session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe idea was born out of frustration with the social injustices we\u2019re continually witnessing in our country, highlighted by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others,\u201d Wooten said. \u201cWith the \u2018Black Lives Matter\u2019 movement growing, it felt like we didn\u2019t have a formal curriculum to bring this movement into our work and specifically discuss racism in medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar to last year, the first session was designed to ensure everyone was on the same page in terms of having a shared terminology to implement when moving forward and tackling the issues of racism in our healthcare system.The goal was also to build a space for encouraging reflection, education, and most importantly, action around racism witnessed every day in healthcare.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA majority of the time was spent in break out groups reflecting on ways implicit bias and structural racism negatively impact our patients, and then trying to brainstorm ways to consciously and actively address this moving forward.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Participants were encouraged to leave with a\u00a0shared vocabulary\u00a0to deliberately engage and support anti-racism efforts, recognize how\u00a0implicit bias\u00a0contributes to\u00a0structural racism, and develop concrete action steps to serve as an\u00a0effective ally and anti-racist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recognizing that talking about structural racism, implicit bias, and racism in medicine can be a challenging, and at times uncomfortable or awkward discussion to have, we want to ensure we create a safe and supportive space to come together with your colleagues and engage in meaningful and productive dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others individuals involved in planning the session were: Christel Wekon-Kemeni, MD (Peds-PGY3), Mike Croglio, MD (Medicine Chief), Hillary Spangler, MD (Med-Peds Chief), Heather Frank, MD (Med-Peds-PGY2),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/tamara-saint-surin-md\/\">Tamara Saint-Surin<\/a>, MD, assistant professor, division of general medicine and clinical epidemiology, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/michael-contarino-md\/\">Mike Contarino<\/a>, MD, associate professor, internal medicine and pediatrics, and program director of the UNC Internal Medicine &amp; Pediatric Residency Program.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>The next EMBRACE session is scheduled for January, focusing on race-based metrics.\u00a0In February, the topic will be micro-aggressions.
