The vice dean for diversity and inclusion for the Feinberg School of Medicine talked about lessons learned from COVID-19, and the path he sees towards health equity. Following are a few thoughts from his lecture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAll of us function with a bias. It\u2019s not the other person. It\u2019s not the neighbor. It\u2019s not the intern\u2026That\u2019s how we make decisions. It\u2019s normal to be biased. It\u2019s ubiquitous. What\u2019s not normal is to act on our biases. What\u2019s not normal is for biases to dictate how we engage with patients.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis is who we are as physicians. We obtain a history\u2026interpret objective data\u2026we pass the boards, we know what we need to do. But here is the friction point\u2026the interpretive eye. It doesn\u2019t impede. Diversity enhances. It doesn\u2019t limit. He recalled his own first appointment, and his eagerness to sign whatever the letter offered. And he cautioned trainees to be certain of what they most value, emphasizing the importance of life balance.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re entering a different professional space\u2026 where you have the license to ask questions that affect your health and wellness.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t go into a work place environment being apologetic about something that is necessary.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou have the right to review these things and make sure the expectations meet your expectations for life.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPhysicians need a sense of community&#8230;they are used to externalizing things.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere should be accommodations for your own cultural persuasions.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere is nothing you can ever do for the sake of your family, that is sincere, that will harm your career. Nothing.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/doctors\/1881707248\">Clyde Yancy<\/a>, MD, MSc, is the Magerstadt Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
