{"id":59947,"date":"2022-06-27T08:44:15","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T12:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/?p=59947"},"modified":"2023-06-06T18:20:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T22:20:37","slug":"dr-christopher-klipstein-turns-the-page-as-clerkship-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/dr-christopher-klipstein-turns-the-page-as-clerkship-director\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Christopher Klipstein Turns the Page as Clerkship Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6968\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 244px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Klipstein-Christopher2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Klipstein-Christopher2-234x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Klipstein-Christopher2\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Klipstein-Christopher2-234x300.jpeg 234w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Klipstein-Christopher2-301x386.jpeg 301w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Klipstein-Christopher2.jpeg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Christopher Klipstein, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/christopher-klipstein-md\/\">Christopher Klipstein<\/a>, MD, has won over 25 teaching awards, been a role model for thousands of medical students and has transformed the Hospital, Interventional and Surgical Care (HISC) course, also known as the Medicine Clerkship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As he turns the page on his 20-year run as clerkship director, he feels lucky to have landed what he sees as, \u201cthe perfect job.\u201d This course plays a pivotal role in a medical student\u2019s education and is often the first time they practice medicine under supervision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe program has gotten picked as a top clerkship many, many, times, and he is often picked as the teacher of the year by not just the students in internal medicine, but the whole medical school,\u201d Dr. Lee Berkowitz, Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine, said. \u201cSo, he has a very strong legacy as a clerkship director and as a great teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Klipstein grew up in Rochester, NY. He attended Williams College for his undergraduate degree and received his medical degree from the University of Rochester, where his father was a professor of medicine. However, for a year in between college and medical school he taught seventh and ninth grade math at a private school in Manhattan. This year of teaching is what Dr. Klipstein credits to much of his success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was able to practice teaching and figure out my style,\u201d Dr. Klipstein said. \u201cBut I think it was very important that I was teaching math, in that math is a subject like medicine, where everything builds on each other. So, I was very supportive of my students, but also very disciplined. If they didn\u2019t understand 100 percent of the material I would have them come in after school and work with me until they got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">That philosophy persisted as he taught medical students. During the first two years of medical school students drink from a firehose of facts, it\u2019s then Dr. Klipstein\u2019s job to help them apply that information to clinical settings during the HISC course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am known by the medical students to strike the pose, \u2018Rodin\u2019s The Thinker,\u2019 Dr. Klipstein said. \u201cThis is my way of saying, \u2018as a doctor you need to not just remember things but organize those facts in our brains to be able to use it clinically.\u2019 So that\u2019s what I really love about teaching. Thirty years of just watching those light bulbs go off and they\u2019re like, \u2018oh, that\u2019s how this fits together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Klipstein is also passionate about connecting with his students and makes it a priority to know everyone by name. As an advisor, he has helped guide many fourth-year medical students through applying for residency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe hugs that I\u2019ve gotten at Match Day are some of my greatest memories,\u201d Dr. Klipstein said. \u201cI\u2019ve always joked that I don\u2019t do any research, but I feel like Match Day\u2019s list of where all the UNC students have matched is my New England Journal of Medicine publication. I feel so proud for the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Klipstein will be stepping away from his role as the HISC course director at the end of June, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/raquel-reyes-md-mpa-steps-in-as-hisc-course-director-clerkship-director\/\">passing the baton to Raquel Reyes, MD, MPH.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m very happy for Raquel Reyes to start because she\u2019s going to be amazing,\u201d Dr. Klipstein said. \u201cIt\u2019s fun for her to live this dream of having this amazing role that\u2019s so critical to medical school.
