Kelly is a baseball\/soccer mom and loves cheese!\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"contentpasted0\">What is your role in the Department and what patients do you serve?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6903\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 228px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Stepanek.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/Stepanek.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Kelly Stepanek, ACNP-BC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I am a hospitalist Nurse Practitioner, rounding daily on medicine pt on the hospitalist service.<\/p>\n<h2>Where are you from?<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m from the suburbs of Chicago.<\/p>\n<h2>Did you always envision yourself as an APP?<\/h2>\n<p>I always knew I wanted to get a graduate degree. My parents were both the first in their families to go to college, and both ended up getting their masters, so I, and my 2 siblings all went to graduate school. It was working in the ICU that solidified my career choice.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the most rewarding part of your work?<\/h2>\n<p>I love that every day is different.\u00a0 You never know what the day will hold, which can be challenging, but it keeps me on my toes.\u00a0 Complacency is thy enemy!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"contentpasted0\">How has your role evolved over time since you\u2019ve been here?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I have been with the hospitalist group almost since it\u2019s inception. Over my 15 years with the division, APP\u2019s have largely played the same role. As with most things, COVID came along, and forced us to become more independent.<\/p>\n<h2>What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?<\/h2>\n<p>There are 2 branches of the hospitalist tree! One is the MD team and the other is the APP team. (I know the tree system is crazy, but you work with what you got!)<\/p>\n<h2>Personally or professionally, what are you most proud of?<\/h2>\n<p>I am proud of how I\u2019ve helped shaped the APP role within my division.\u00a0 In my 15 years, we\u2019ve gone from 2 APPs to 7 daytime APPs and 3 night APPs.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"contentpasted0\">If you didn\u2019t have a career in medicine, what would you be doing? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Talk show\/podcast. I talk A LOT and have a A LOT of opinions!<\/p>\n<h2>What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?<\/h2>\n<p>I run, I read, but mostly, I can be found at the baseball field or the soccer field with one of my children.
