This campaign aims to raise awareness about the life-saving impact that each donation can have on individuals facing medical emergencies, surgeries, and chronic illnesses. This month also highlights the appreciation of donors\u2019 contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is the month dedicated to appreciating donors and raising awareness for the need, it also creates a platform to encourage communities to engage in donation drives, educational programs, and outreach efforts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/uncmc\/patients-visitors\/blood\/\"><em>UNC Blood Donation Center<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>January 15: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62034\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 171px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2023\/12\/Dr.MartinLutherKingJr-e1703107830289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"255\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This day holds a significant historical importance as it commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The observance is held every year on the third Monday of January, this year it falls on Dr. King\u2019s birthday, January 15.<br \/>\nThis holiday was selected by activists and leaders seeking to recognize and celebrate the many achievements and contributions Dr. King made to the Civil Rights Movement. His galvanizing speeches, such as his, \u201cI Have a Dream,\u201d and his efforts in organizing nonviolent protests have helped shape the source of history. Additionally, Dr. King\u2019s pursuit of justice and equality for all has left a lasting mark on the fight for civil rights globally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.unc.edu\/events-programs\/mlk\/\"><em>UNC MLK Jr. Day Celebration Events<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Other Holidays and Observances<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Jan. 4:<\/strong> World Braille Day commemorates the transformative impact of Louis Braille\u2019s invention which empowers the visually impaired by allowing communication through Braille.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan. 13:<\/strong> Korean American Day honors the people of Korean descent who have contributed to the cultural mosaic of the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan. 15:<\/strong> Makar Sankranti marks the vibrant Hindu festival celebrating the harvest season, symbolizing new beginnings, unity, and the transition of the sun into the Capricorn zodiac sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan 18:<\/strong> Bodhi Day (Lunar) commemorates the enlightenment of Buddha under the Bodhi tree, signifying spiritual awakening, understanding, and the path to liberation from suffering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan. 24-25: <\/strong>Tu BiShvat is known as the Jewish \u201cNew year of the Trees,\u201d and signifies the start of a tree\u2019s life cycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan. 27: <\/strong>International Holocaust Remembrance Day solemnly honors the lives and memories of the millions of victims of the Holocaust.
