{"id":67036,"date":"2024-03-04T14:52:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/?p=67036"},"modified":"2024-03-08T11:30:36","modified_gmt":"2024-03-08T16:30:36","slug":"department-of-medicine-grants-funding-february-1-february-29-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/department-of-medicine-grants-funding-february-1-february-29-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Medicine Grants &amp; Funding: February 1 \u2013 February 29, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>UNC Department of Medicine <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.unchealthcare.org\/2024\/02\/unc-school-of-medicine-ranks-6th-in-nih-funding-for-public-universities\" rel=\"noopener\">ranked 23rd in the country<\/a> in total National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for federal fiscal year 2023 and 8th among peer public universities, according to a new report published by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.<\/p>\n<h3>Division of Rheumatology, Allergy &amp; Immunology<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Saira Sheikh, MD, Vimal Derebail, MD, MPH, and Tessa Englund <\/strong>received a $25K Aurinia&#8217;s 2024 Community Impact Grant Award for the project, &#8220;\u201cBridging the Gap: A Community-Engaged Approach to Overcome Healthcare Barriers for Patients with SLE &amp; Lupus Nephritis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Division of Cardiology<\/h3>\n<p>The Lab of <strong>Robert Wirka, MD,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/mhi\/the-wirka-lab-awarded-r01-grant-from-the-national-institutes-of-health-nih-national-heart-lung-and-blood-institute-nhlbi\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> received an R01 grant<\/a>, entitled \u201cThe role of Twist1 in smooth muscle cells during atherosclerosis\u201d, from NIH\u2019s NHLBI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Jensen, MD,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/jensen-receives-1-4m-to-study\/\" rel=\"noopener\">received an R01<\/a> ($1.4M direct) from the NHLBI to study the effects of MEK and MEK inhibitors on mitochondria in cardiomyocytes and triple negative breast cancer cells.
