Meet Kelly Ingram, MD, a first year resident who aspires always to surround herself with unique individuals (including her dachshund Schryer) !<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"Why UNC for residency?<\/b><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
I firmly believe that when something is meant to be, everything just feels right and I\u2019ve followed these instincts on several big life decisions. Of course, I created spreadsheets and spent days over analyzing my residency rank list; but, in the end, I went with what felt right.\u00a0The way the people at UNC made me feel during and after my interview was the deciding factor. I learned that this program was full of genuine, caring people that focused on the collective good. It was a program that encourages diversity in background and thought and a place where I would learn from some of the best in the world.\u00a0So, while I could list endless empirical reasons why UNC was my top choice, it ultimately just felt right and now that I am here, I couldn\u2019t be happier with my choice.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Tell us about your future career goals.<\/b><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
One of the great things about internal medicine is that you get to experience so many possible career paths. While I\u2019ve certainly changed my mind a few times, I see myself specializing in either Transplant Nephrology or Allergy and Immunology. I\u2019m a scientist at heart and my background in immunogenetics and microbiology will ultimately influence where I end up.<\/div>\n

Best advice you have ever received?<\/b><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
When I started working prior to going to medical school, someone told me that if I ever found myself in a room where I was the smartest person, then I was in the wrong room.\u00a0I took this to mean that I should always strive to learn and constantly surround myself with people who are different than me. We learn the most when those we\u2019re surrounded by have different lived experiences than ourselves, different points of view, and challenge us to think beyond what is familiar.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

What is a passion of yours outside of medicine?<\/b><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
Spending time with my family is always my top priority. Now that I am a busy resident, I\u2019ve found that it only makes time spent with my husband, Patrick, and dog, Schuyler, more precious. We love going for walks, watching TV or movies, and playing games together. I also love to read, mostly dystopian fiction or fantasy, and going on cruises.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Do you have a fun\/unique fact you would like to share?<\/b><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
My entire family is dedicated to being life-long learners. My mom, a nurse turned elementary school teacher, instilled in me a love for medicine and learning at a very young age. My dad recently graduated (in his 60s!) with his bachelor\u2019s degree from ECU. And my brother is a college professor turned software engineer. Education is a passion of mine that I share with my family and I hope to have many opportunities to teach in the future.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
