This program supports medical students at UNC SOM who identify as first-generation college students, meaning they were the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. These students have limited outlets of support from individuals who can relate to specific challenges and barriers faced in navigating medical education.<\/p>\n<p>Having mentors who identify as First Gen is beneficial, but mentors of all backgrounds and specialties, as long as they understand the challenges of being a F1rst Gen student, are welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>This is meant to be a flexible commitment that involves meeting a few times per year in person or virtually at your convenience. Many find this to be a valuable opportunity to highlight mentorship experience on resident and fellow CV.<\/p>\n<p>Last year students provided positive feedback about this mentorship program and found it to be tremendously helpful in their med school journey.
