Jonathan Serody, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Jonathan Serody, MD<\/a>, the Elizabeth Thomas Professor of Medicine and division chief of Hematology, has been honored with this year’s Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award. This accolade recognizes those who contribute significantly to scientific achievements and service.<\/p>\n

Dr. Serody has been involved in many notable cancer research projects. He pioneered the use of RNA genomics to study the tumor microenvironment. Most recently, he directed the creation of UNC Lineberger\u2019s Advanced Cellular Therapeutics Facility<\/a> and cellular therapy program<\/a>, which has quickly grown into one of the nation\u2019s largest and most productive. In under a decade, the program has developed and launched nearly 20 clinical trials using novel CAR-T therapies.<\/p>\n

Lisa A. Carey, MD, ScM, FASCO<\/a>, L. Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor for Breast Cancer Research, was among Dr. Serody’s nominators. Dr. Carey cited his groundbreaking contributions to bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, tumor immunology, and the development of the cellular therapy programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is an outstanding clinician, an innovative researcher, and a compassionate educator who has a true interest in serving others. He is a physician-scientist who ensures that the studies he undertakes have as much clinical translational potential as possible to help as many people as possible.\u201d<\/em> said Dr. Carey.<\/p>\n
