The UNC Internal Medicine Residency Program welcomes the following chief residents who will serve during the 2025-2026 academic year. The administrative chief resident is a position of distinction, professionalism and leadership. These appointed physicians will lead and mentor residents, as they learn to recognize the needs of the department and hospital.<\/p>\n

Outpatient Chief: Lexus Andrews, MD, MBA<\/h3>\n
\n
Dr. Lexus Andrews<\/strong> is originally from Mobile, Alabama and attended Millsaps College where she majored in Biology and was on the varsity volleyball team. After college, she completed an MBA at Millsaps before returning to Alabama for medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She then moved to North Carolina to complete her residency in Internal Medicine at UNC and now serves as the Ambulatory Chief Resident for the program. Following her chief residency year, she plans to pursue a fellowship in geriatric medicine. In her free time, Lexus enjoys traveling, knitting, exploring new restaurants, and watching Alabama football (Roll Tide!).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Medicine-Pediatrics Chief: Maggie Fennell, MD<\/h3>\n
\n
Dr. Maggie Fennell<\/span><\/strong> (she\/her) hails from Upstate New York. She graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Government, a minor in English and plans to study law. After working as a litigation paralegal, she completed the post-baccalaureate program at Bryn Mawr College. She returned to Upstate to enroll in the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where she was a member of the Medical Education Pathway, a leader of UR Well (Rochester\u2019s student-run, free clinic), and active in Rochester\u2019s Medical Students for Choice chapter. She graduated from the University of Rochester as a member of AOA. At UNC she has continued to pursue her passion for medical education and developed a new interest in point-of-care ultrasound.<\/div>\n
In her spare time, you\u2019ll find Maggie baking, learning to cross stitch, going to concerts with co-residents, watching every British TV show she can find, and trying all the best food the Triangle has to offer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Inpatient Chief: Bobby Ijeoma, MD<\/h3>\n
\n
Dr. Bobby Ijeoma<\/strong> grew up in Dallas, Georgia. He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for college and graduated with a degree in Chemistry with minors in Biology and Spanish. Bobby then attended Emory University School of Medicine where he was active in the medical student senate and the Student National Medical Association. Bobby was drawn to Chapel Hill for residency and now serves as one of the inpatient chief residents. Following his training he plans to pursue a fellowship in gastroenterology. Bobby enjoys music, running, and board games with friends.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

WakeMed Chief: Govind Kallumkal, MD<\/h3>\n
\n
\n

Dr. Govind<\/span> Kallumkal<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is originally from Tallahassee, Florida and attending FSU for his bachelor\u2019s degree majoring in Biological Sciences and a Minor in Chemistry. He then attended medical school at the University of Florida where he served as his class\u2019s representative, as well as a member of multiple task forces including the UFCOM curriculum committee, as a member of the admissions committee, and coordinating 1st<\/sup>year as well as 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span>year orientation. He then moved to North Carolina to complete his residency in Internal Medicine and now serves as the WakeMed Chief. Outside of\u00a0medicine, Govind<\/span>enjoys exploring the triangle with his wife, hiking with his dogs, as well as weightlifting and playing tennis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Inpatient Chief: Christina Siems, MD, M.Ed, MA<\/h3>\n
\n
\n

Christina is originally from Ohio and attended The Ohio State\u00a0University where she graduated with a degree in Human Development\u00a0and a master\u2019s degree in Education. After college, she worked as an elementary school teacher and pursued a M.A. in Bioethics before going to Loyola in Chicago for medical school. She then moved to North Carolina for internal medicine residency at UNC and now serves as Inpatient Chief Resident for the program. After her chief residency year, she plans to contniue working in academic medicine and medical education.<\/p>\n

Outside of medicine, Christina has enjoyed\u00a0working part-time as an actress (including host of a local cable TV show “Around the Town”, an appearance as a nurse in\u00a0Chicago Med and background actress in other shows such as Empire,\u00a0Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Fargo, and Batwoman). Christina enjoys coffee (and co-founded Pilot\u2019s Coffee with her husband)\u00a0and being a Grill Master (she won the Ohio State Grill Master title for the barbecue competition judged\u00a0by OSU Food Science Faculty in 2017)!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
