Meet Dr. Wheeler, a pulmonary and critical care physician and the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte!<\/em><\/p>\n

Tell us a little about how got interested in education and your background ?<\/h3>\n
\u00a0I graduated from the\u00a0<\/span>University<\/span>\u00a0of Illinois College of\u00a0<\/span>medicine<\/span>\u00a0in 1990<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I had a 3-<\/span>year Air<\/span>\u00a0Force scholarship and then went on to internal medicine residency training at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio from 19 90-93 and pulmonary and critical care medicine from 19 93-19 96 at Lachlan Air Force Base in Texas.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0I was one\u00a0<\/span>that really enjoyed all of my rotations<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and I really tried to gain experience and knowledge on whichever service I was\u00a0<\/span>participating<\/span>.\u00a0 I had a lot of great teachers and mentors in medical school and then in residency training which\u00a0<\/span>influenced<\/span>\u00a0my decision to pursue internal medicine and then pulmonary and critical care medicine<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have always enjoyed teaching even as a senior resident and fellow<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I was fortunate to be able to have a family practice program during my Air Force staff assignment following matriculation from pulmonary and critical care fellowship<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I always enjoyed the morning report format<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I enjoyed teaching and was\u00a0<\/span>elected<\/span>\u00a0teacher of the year while I was at Eglin Air Force Base<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I followed one of my mentors in pulmonary and critical care medicine to Charlotte upon completing my Air Force obligation<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>My wife initially was surprised that I did not pursue a teaching position at a\u00a0<\/span>community-based<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>program,<\/span>\u00a0but I have been\u00a0<\/span>very happy<\/span>\u00a0here<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have enjoyed teaching residents and advanced practitioners as our involvement in medical education has developed over\u00a0<\/span>my<\/span>\u00a026 years here at Novant<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I was\u00a0<\/span>very excited<\/span>\u00a0when the program arrangement was made with UNC Charlotte and have thoroughly enjoyed having both 3rd and 4th year students on our critical care service<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have not attended any formal training other than workshops that have occurred while in the Air Force and more recently as provided by the UNC<\/span>\u00a0program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have found the UNC presentations very helpful.<\/span>\u00a0 Currently I am the medical director of the intensive care unit at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte and have been for more than 15 years and they have the main liaison for the UNC ICU rotation<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0I envision a continued collaboration with UNC to make sure the goals of the University are met by students and that we continue to provide\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>good<\/span>\u00a0experience<\/span>\u00a0for the students to rotate on our service\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

What is the most valuable aspect in medical education for you?<\/span><\/h3>\n

I really enjoy learning and continue to learn every day.\u00a0 I learned from the\u00a0<\/span>students,<\/span>\u00a0and I\u00a0<\/span>love<\/span>\u00a0when students\u00a0<\/span>asked<\/span>\u00a0me questions.\u00a0 I have been amazed how technology including better radiology services like ultrasound and artificial intelligence are influencing and have\u00a0<\/span>a potential<\/span>\u00a0to improve our treatment of patients<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I am learning just like the students are<\/span>\u00a0in these regards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They often are able to teach me things to help me be more efficient.<\/span>\u00a0 It has also been interesting to see how\u00a0<\/span>medical dogma<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>from the past is no longer so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0current time<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0our future understanding<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will evolve\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0 be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>better<\/span>\u00a0in the future<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It has made\u00a0<\/span>me<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>more<\/span>\u00a0cautious and how I present knowledge and forces me to remain up-to-date and provide evidence-based explanations.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"What do you enjoy in your free time or outside work?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Outside<\/span>\u00a0of work, I really enjoy all kinds of physical activity<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have been a lifelong athlete and played hockey in college<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I continued running and performing triathlons in addition to other various sports that have included racquetball softball and more recently pickleball<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>My main\u00a0<\/span>activity, however,<\/span>\u00a0has been cycling over the last 10 to 15 years<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I am currently riding between 5000\u00a0<\/span>6000 miles<\/span>\u00a0annually<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>My wife and\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>participate<\/span>\u00a0annually<\/span>\u00a0in a\u00a0<\/span>260-mile<\/span>\u00a0bike ride from\u00a0<\/span>Simpsonville<\/span>\u00a0South Carolina near Greenville to Charleston and supportive Alzheimer’s<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Between my wife and I, 3 of our parents have battled\u00a0<\/span>various types<\/span>\u00a0of dementia<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I really enjoy traveling and especially traveling with her over the children<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We have gone on trips to the Canadian Rockies, Iceland, Portugal, Santa Fe<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Spain<\/span>\u00a0and Italy within the last 10 to 15 years and hope to continue this in the future<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>These trips are usually combined with some\u00a0<\/span>element<\/span>\u00a0of cultural pursuit and often\u00a0<\/span>multi-sport<\/span>\u00a0activities (hiking, biking, etc.).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What advice would you give to a 1st year medical student? \u00a04th year student?<\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/span>I would\u00a0<\/span>advise a first-year student to<\/span>\u00a0try to soak up as many clinical experiences as they can regardless of the service\u00a0<\/span>they are<\/span>\u00a0on or whether they envision going into that field<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I have learned immensely from my experiences on obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and pediatrics<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I still\u00a0<\/span>retained<\/span>\u00a0a fair amount of knowledge from those\u00a0<\/span>experiences,<\/span>\u00a0and they\u00a0<\/span>come in handy quite<\/span>\u00a0a bit more commonly\u00a0<\/span>than one<\/span>\u00a0might expect\u2013that may reflect my chosen field of critical care\u00a0<\/span>medicine<\/span>\u00a0which is quite broad<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I would also encourage directed<\/span>\u00a0self<\/span>\u2013\u00a0<\/span>learning<\/span>\u00a0on problems that affect\u00a0<\/span>individual\u00a0<\/span>patient\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0clinical problems<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 I would also encourage trying some electives that may be outside the\u00a0<\/span>individuals<\/span>\u00a0perceived<\/span>\u00a0career field\u2013opinions and choices like change<\/span>!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I would encourage fourth-year students to pay attention to mentors and how they interact with\u00a0<\/span>colleagues,<\/span>\u00a0nurses<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and families<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>A lot can be gleaned from that to help with bedside manner communication\u00a0<\/span>etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I would also encourage fourth-year students to\u00a0<\/span>not be<\/span>\u00a0afraid to take the lead on driving patient care,\u00a0<\/span>coming up with<\/span>\u00a0plans of care and diagnostic evaluations especially in notes and bedside presentations<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It will soon be the time when they are\u00a0<\/span>the responsible one<\/span>\u00a0in just a few short months<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I would also encourage both 1st and 4th year students to make sure they have outside interests that they\u00a0<\/span>maintain<\/span>\u00a0and keep a strong social network<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>These t<\/span>z<\/span>wo things<\/span>\u00a0are invaluable for success during medical school and afterwards.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
