Two cases will be used as examples to highlight pitfalls in the diagnosis of empyema. The role of non-invasive studies including thoracic ultrasound and the approach to pleural drainage and interpleural therapy with tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and DNase will be discussed.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Jason Akulian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pulmonary\/about-us\/faculty\/pulmonary\/akulian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin-top: 0; padding-top: 0;\" title=\"Jason Akulian\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2019\/02\/jason-akulian.png\" alt=\"Jason Akulian\" \/><\/a><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Patricia Rivera\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pulmonary\/about-us\/faculty\/pulmonary\/rivera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia Rivera<\/a> specializes in the care of patients with lung cancer, immunocompromised hosts, lung screen screening, novel approaches for early detection of lung cancer in high-risk patients, chemotherapy and radiation-induced pneumonitis. She is a professor in the division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Jason Akulian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pulmonary\/about-us\/faculty\/pulmonary\/akulian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Akulian<\/a> is an assistant professor and Director of Interventional Pulmonology.
