Nicholas Shaheen, MD, MPH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Nicholas J. Shaheen, MD, MPH<\/strong> is the Bozymski-Heizer Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UNC.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaheen\u2019s research interests center on gastroesophageal reflux disease, and pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions of the esophagus.\u00a0 He has a clinical and research interest in early detection and treatment of cancerous and precancerous lesions of the esophagus, including endoscopic treatment of Barrett\u2019s esophagus.\u00a0 He has authored greater than 300 publications in these areas. He is primary or secondary author on guidelines statements on Barrett\u2019s esophagus, GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis and the use of endoscopy. He has served as senior associate editor for the American Journal of Gastroenterology, and on multiple other editorial boards.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaheen is currently principal investigator on multiple NIH grants investigating aspects of esophagus disease.\u00a0 He is also the co-PI of UNC\u2019s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), and co-director of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaheen is committed to mentoring and has served as a mentor for many clinical and translational \u00a0researchers, including GI fellows, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows.\u00a0 He completed a K24 Mid-Career Award from NIDDK to mentor clinical researchers.\u00a0 He received the AGA\u2019s Outstanding Mentor Award for the EGD section in 2018.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaheen currently serves as the Director of the ACG Institute for Clinical Research and Education.\u00a0 During his tenure, the Institute developed 4 new grants programs, the Young Physicians\u2019 Leadership Scholars Program, the Edgar Achkar Visiting Professorship Program, and multiple \u2018Schools\u201d in subject areas like Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Functional Bowel syndromes and Hepatology, among other initiatives.\u00a0 He encourages his colleagues to make an investment in the future of our profession by donating to the G.U.T. fund, which provides resources to support and expand the Institute\u2019s work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
