The Medical Education Development (MED) program at UNC-Chapel Hill was established in 1974 as a joint venture between the UNC Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The MED Program provides an intensive educational opportunity for students from underrepresented populations to gain insight into medical, dental and allied health professions. The rigorous nine week curriculum includes over 200 class and lab hours in courses like Gross Anatomy, Histology and MCAT exposure and includes professional seminars and patient simulation experiences.

Since inception in 1974, 3,000 students have attended the MED summer program. 88% of those students applied to medical school, dental school, or advanced degree programs. 92% matriculating into medical or dental school, and the remainder entering other health profession schools. To date, nearly 600 of the MED participants have also received a medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine.
