Smoking

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of disease. More than 400,000 deaths occur each year in the U.S. as a result of cigarette smoking.

In addition, exposure to secondhand smoke is estimated to cause 40,000 deaths each year from heart disease and contributes to other diseases as well. Smoking is also a major cause of non-fatal diseases, including:

  • osteoporosis
  • skin wrinkling
  • peptic ulcer disease
  • impotence
  • pregnancy complications.

Even smoking small amounts, such as one cigarette a day, is associated with increased health risks.
