{"id":2207,"date":"2013-09-30T16:40:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T20:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med-mfmu.sites.unc.edu\/mfmu\/current-studies\/study-3-page\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T09:46:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:46:18","slug":"study-3-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/mfmu\/current-studies\/study-3-page\/","title":{"rendered":"PRECEDE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Azithromycin Prophylaxis for PRElabor CEsarean DElivery Trial (PRECEDE)<\/p>\n<p>The PRECEDE trial is looking to see if adding an extra antibiotic (azithromycin) to the different antibiotics already given at the time of a planned<br \/>\ncesarean delivery reduces postpartum infection rates for participants and their newborns.<\/p>\n<h2>Azithromycin:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Commonly used antibiotic, sometimes called a Z-Pak<\/li>\n<li>Approved for use in pregnant women intravenously (IV)<\/li>\n<li>A standard medication used to prevent infections in laboring women having <em>unscheduled\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>emergency<\/em> cesarean delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>However, there have not been studies done to determine the possible benefits of azithromycin use in women with\u00a0<em>scheduled\u00a0<\/em>cesareans and who are not considered to be in labor. We hope that PRECEDE will fill this gap in research to prevent delivery related infections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>You may be right for this study if:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You are pregnant with one or two babies<\/li>\n<li>You are at least 23 weeks pregnant<\/li>\n<li>You are planning to have a cesarean delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"Default\">This study is not right for you if:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You are planning to labor and have a vaginal delivery<\/li>\n<li>You are having triplets or more than two babies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If you are not sure if you qualify please <\/em><a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/mfmu\/contact\" target=\"_self\"><b><i>contact us<\/i><\/b><\/a><em> so we can help guide you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>*This study will be recruiting through spring 2028 and participants will be compensated for their time*<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>More Information<\/h2>\n<p>This study is funded by the<em> Eunice Kennedy Shriver<\/em> National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
