Friede, MD, FACC, FSCAI, Assistant Professor of Medicine; Associate Director, Interventional Cardiology Fellowship; Associate Director for Research, Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, in collaboration with the Lab of Prabir Roy-Chaudhury, M.D., Ph.D., FASN; Drs. Ronald & Katherine Falk Eminent Professor in Nephrology; Co-Director, University of North Carolina (UNC) Kidney Center, Akshay Roy-Chaudhury, M.D., Cardiovascular Disease Fellow, UNC Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, and Unimunkh Uriyanghai, a senior research scientist in the UNC Kidney Center, for demonstrating the feasibility of performing intravascular ultrasound imaging of AVFs.
Dr. Prabir Roy-Chaudhury is the co-director of the UNC Kidney Center and is a renowned researcher in the areas of uremic vascular biology and the flow dynamics of AVFs used for hemodialysis. The project demonstrated the feasibility of performing intravascular ultrasound imaging of AVFs in an animal model, using techniques commonly used in interventional cardiology. The team completed a successful “proof-of-concept” demonstration procedure on November 19, 2025. We are looking forward to ongoing partnership and collaboration with the Roy-Chaudhury Lab!
