What is Mibio?

In short, MiBio is a program supporting the training of Cellular and Molecular Biologists in graduate school. Long version: Mibio students share an interest in investigating the molecular mechanisms that dictate biological processes. They share a common a desire to elucidate precisely how genes and gene products interact functionally in cells. Specific research areas include the function of macromolecules, dynamics and forces in cellular processes such as division, gene regulation, genome stability, and control of single cell fates during development. Trainees utilize a variety of model experimental systems and modern quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches. Students are from multiple departments, curricula, and schools at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

What are the benefits?

It will get you together with a group of like-minding scientists, both graduate students and faculty. It allows you to participate in a number of programmatic elements throughout your graduate career; please see links from this home page describing these elements. MiBio may additionally provide a portion of your stipend support, pending review of your application in an annual competitive review. Acceptance to the program and participation in programmatic elements is not tied to support.

Who can join, and what are the requirements for joining?

Once you join MiBio, we expect you to be a part of this program for the duration of your graduate degree work, and acknowledge MiBio support in your many publications. Participation in specific programmatic elements is as noted for each element. There are also required courses; for the most part, these courses are ones you’ll be taking anyway given your interests. How do I apply?

A call for applications will be circulated in early May, and will include specific deadlines for that year. Candidate trainees should then submit the following:

  1. A trainee-prepared 1 page description of her/his preliminary research plan, emphasizing its appropriateness to the MiBio program, as well as how MiBio is expected to help the trainee reach career goals.
  2. A 2 page trainee CV, including grades for graduate courses that have been completed, current PhD program, as well as the name of the trainee’s first year group leader.
  3. A letter of support from the trainees’ mentor (sponsor).

The trainee candidate should then expect to interview with two members of the selection committee.
