The Microbiology and Immunology Department continues its trend of excellence for the second year in a row, as the Graduate School’s Graduate Education Advancement Board (GEAB) announced Aadra Bhatt (Ph.D student in the Blossom Damania lab) as one of the recipients of their Impact Awards. The GEAB Impact Awards are given out to graduate students whose research will directly benefit residents of North Carolina. These awardees come from all aspects of research that UNC conducts (covering topics ranging from the environment to public health research). Aadra researches cell growth and cell cycle control to try to inhibit an extremely aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). Her research identified a compound that has shown real promise in stopping this disease. In fact, it has been so impressive that Novartis is implementing a clinical trial using her findings at the NC Cancer Center, located on the campus of UNC. Congratulations again to Aadra!
