The Symposium for Basic Immune Mechanisms was held in the Lineberger Cancer Center on Thursday, July 7th. Talks covered an array of topics ranging from virulence mechanisms of plant pathogens to the impact of smoking on Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The symposium was supported by the NIH NIAD (T32), the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, as well as the UNC School of Medicine.

A judged poster session followed the talks. Top prize of $200 was awarded to Sun-ah Kang from the Vilen lab for her poster “Accumulation of IgG-immune complexs on DCs/MFs”. Second place and $100 was awarded to Erin Steinbach from the Plevy lab for her poster titled “Defective innate immunity in PI3K p110d mutant mice contributes to the development of colitis”.
