I am sad to relay the news that our friend and colleague Oliver Smithies died after a brief illness. Oliver joined the UNC faculty in 1988 and was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2007 for “discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells.” The list of his accomplishments during a scientific career that lasted 70+ years is far too long to summarize here, so please read the 2015 interview at the link below.
