The New York Times article below is a nice tribute to an influential scientist who fundamentally changed the field of infectious disease research by applying the newly emerging tools and strategies of molecular genetics. Perhaps just as important was the legacy of his remarkable track record of mentorship, with a long trainee list that includes M&I Professor Virginia Miller, Duke Professor Raphael Valdivia, and NCSU Professor Emeritus Paul Orndorff.
