Resolution 2020-6. On Amending the Guidelines for Course Syllabi

The Faculty Council amends the Guidelines for Course Syllabi adopted in Resolution 2012-11 by adding the following paragraph at the end.

Student Support Services: The syllabus must include information about Accessibility Resources and Service (ARS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Title IX resources to ensure that students are aware of these services and how to access them.

The Office of Undergraduate Curricula shall provide, on its website, recommended language to implement this new policy.

This resolution implements the policy recommendations of the “CAPS and ARS Syllabi Statements Proposal” in a way consistent with the language of Faculty Council Resolution 2012- 11, which established the current policy for course syllabi used by the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools. Making the added policy language general and brief allows the Office of Undergraduate Curricula (OUC) to modify its recommended language for syllabi as circumstances change in future years without the need for further Faculty Council action. Note that recommended
language for all of these student services is already posted on the OUC Syllabus Guidelines page at https://curricula.unc.edu/curriculum-proposals/cim/syllabus/. Thus, adopting this resolution simply updates the policy to reflect the current OUC practice.

The proposal mentioned above was first presented to Faculty Council by students Emma Caponigro and Raleigh Cury, speaking on behalf of Undergraduate Student Mental Health Task Force, in November 2018. It was amended in March 2020 to include information on Title IX resources. In October 2020 the Undergraduate Student Senate passed a resolution (USR-102-154) urging UNC’s deans to add
information on CAPS and ARS to their schools’ syllabus templates.

The Educational Policy Committee supports Resolution 2020-6 and recommends that it be passed.
