Philip Manire Graduate Student Excellence in Research Award<\/h2><\/h3>\n<p>The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is pleased to call for nominations for the G. Philip Manire Award, which was established in 2004. \u00a0Dr. Manire was an active member of the UNC Faculty from 1950 until his retirement in 1989. \u00a0During his illustrious career at UNC- CH, he served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences (1965-66), Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (1966-79), and Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Graduate School (1979-86). \u00a0This award is given in his memory, recognizing his dedication to the University of North Carolina and to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, as well as his love of graduate education and research.<\/p>\n<p>The Department will give a monetary award of $1,000 to an outstanding M&amp;I graduate student who is judged to have carried out the most significant and impressive research project during his or her career at UNC.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Nominations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Any Microbiology and Immunology faculty member may nominate any current Microbiology and Immunology graduate student in his or her final year of study. \u00a0The electronic nomination package should contain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A current curriculum vitae<\/li>\n<li>A description of the student\u2019s research accomplishments, written by the student and not to exceed three pages in length (single-spaced, 1&#8243; margins, 12 point font). Literature references do not count against the length limit.<\/li>\n<li>Three letters of recommendation, including one letter from the student\u2019s mentor and two letters from other faculty members. These letters should <u>not<\/u> consist mostly of descriptions of the details of the research. \u00a0Instead, the letters should focus on the specific contributions that the nominated student has made to the project and the role of the student in initiating and\/or developing new lines of investigation in the laboratory. \u00a0The letter from the student\u2019s mentor should also place the student\u2019s research in the context of the larger field and should describe the student\u2019s role in any publications on which he or she is an author. \u00a0Letters should be sent from the recommenders, not the<\/li>\n<li>.pdf copies of publications or preprints on which the nominee is an<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Send all elements electronically to Jamie Desoto (<a href=\"mailto:jamie_desoto@unc.edu\">jamie_desoto@unc.edu<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Review<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A committee consisting of faculty appointed by the Director of Graduate Studies will review the nominations. \u00a0Selection of the Manire Award recipient will be based on the quality and significance of the student\u2019s research, his or her productivity, the comments of the references, and the quality of the research description written by the student.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recipient Announced<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Manire Award recipient will be announced at the Graduate Program Welcome event on May 17, 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nominations must be received by 12:00 pm (noon) on Wednesday, May 1, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Students may only be nominated for this award or the G.
