Family members and guest of new students participated via Zoom from across the country to learn about life as a graduate student, UNC Chapel Hill, and the MCRO Ph.D. program. Department members located in Chapel Hill were welcomed in-person for the hybrid event.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the program, our 12 new students first gave short talks about their dissertation projects. Those students include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rachel Burdorf, Swanstrom &amp; Joseph labs<\/li>\n<li>Margaret Dedloff, Cotter lab<\/li>\n<li>Brian Fay, Ting lab<\/li>\n<li>Nicole Gadda, Tamayo lab<\/li>\n<li>Matt Higgs, Wolfgang lab<\/li>\n<li>Cat Lewis, Browne lab<\/li>\n<li>Cristian Roca Avendano, Wolfgang lab<\/li>\n<li>Stephen Salisbury, Miller lab<\/li>\n<li>Jack Sears, Heise &amp; Moorman labs<\/li>\n<li>Alexa Spandrio, Cotter lab<\/li>\n<li>Amanda Velez, Conlon lab<\/li>\n<li>Danielle Williams, Swanstrom lab<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new students received white lab coats embroidered with the department logo, and recited a graduate student oath, which they collectively wrote and agreed upon. Finally, the third-year class welcomed the new students. An outdoor reception followed on the balcony of MBRB.<\/p>\n<p><em>2021 M&amp;I Graduate Student Oath<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI, [NAME], have entered the serious pursuit of new knowledge as a member of the community of scientists in the Department of Microbiology &amp; Immunology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. As I embark on my Ph.D. training, I willingly pledge the following:<\/p>\n<p>I will strive\u00a0to be\u00a0a\u00a0leader within the department\u00a0and\u00a0to contribute\u00a0constructively to the culture, wellbeing, and community.<\/p>\n<p>I will foster an\u00a0environment where\u00a0everyone\u00a0feels\u00a0comfortable being\u00a0their full selves,\u00a0inclusive\u00a0of disability, gender identity,\u00a0sexual orientation,\u00a0socioeconomic status,\u00a0race, and ethnic\u00a0background.<\/p>\n<p>I will strive to always be ethical and moral, conducting myself\u00a0with scientific integrity in my research and professional\u00a0life.<\/p>\n<p>I will acknowledge and honor the contributions of scientists who have preceded me and strive to be a worthy role model and mentor for those who follow me.<\/p>\n<p>I will actively participate in outreach and community-building to engage the next generation of\u00a0scientists.<\/p>\n<p>I will seek to\u00a0clearly communicate my work to\u00a0increase public understanding of\u00a0science, including\u00a0scientific\u00a0principles,\u00a0and\u00a0its humanitarian\u00a0goals.<\/p>\n<p>With this Graduate Student Oath, I declare my commitment to these professional standards and goals.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 26th, 2021, the M&amp;I Department held their 8th annual Graduate Student Welcome event.
