DESCRIPTION:“Regulation of Synaptic Development through L1-CAMs and Autism Risk Gene Ankyrin 2”\nPatricia F. Maness\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\nDepartment of Biochemistry and Biophysics \nPatricia F. Maness\, Ph.D.\, received her doctorate in Biochemistry in 1975 from the University of Texas. She was an Anna Fuller Fund Postdoctoral Fellow from 1978-1980 at the Rockefeller University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Gerald M. Edelman\, and Assistant Professor. Since 1980 Dr. Maness has served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Chapel Hill for 45 years\, where she is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. She is a member of the UNC Neuroscience Center\, UNC Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities\, and UNC Curriculum in Neurobiology. Dr. Maness’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms governing development of the mammalian nervous system; specifically\, mechanisms of axon guidance and synaptogenesis and their disruption in neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism\, schizophrenia\, and intellectual disability. She has held continuous funding from NIH\, NSF\, NARSAD\, and other agencies. Dr. Maness has been a standing member of NIH Study Sections Neurology C and NDPR (Neurodifferentiation\, Plasticity and Regeneration)\, and served on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. Dr. Maness has received national recognition for her research\, including the Hilton Distinguished Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD)\, a Pogue Fellowship for Scholarly Research\, an NIH Career Development Award\, and the Jefferson-Pilot Award in Academic Research.

DESCRIPTION:UNC Neurology is pleased to present the 2nd annual Neurology Day exhibiting neurology research\, collaboration and trainee showcase. \n\nAnnouncing Keynote Speaker: Michael Fox\, MD\, PhD\nMichael Fox\, MD\, PhD\nDr. Fox is the Founding Director of the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics and a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fox’s goal is to use research advances in brain imaging and neuromodulation technology to provide better treatments for his patients\, especially patients with symptoms that are refractory to medication.  He approaches both neurological and psychiatric symptoms as disorders of brain circuits\, and uses tools such as deep brain stimulation (DBS)\, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)\, and focused ultrasound (FUS) to target these circuits for symptom relief. \nDr. Fox’s clinical practice focuses on patients with medication-refractory neurological or psychiatric symptom that may benefit from neuromodulation therapy.  His practice includes deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease\, essential tremor\, and dystonia\, focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of tremor\, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of medication-refractory depression. \nDr Fox’s research focuses on developing new and improved treatments for brain disease based on understanding brain circuits and the effects of brain stimulation. He helped develop brain imaging techniques for visualizing human brain circuits\, and is a leader in applying these techniques towards improved neuromodulation therapies. DESCRIPTION:UNC Neurology is pleased to host Dr. Christine Grady\, Former Chair Dept. of Bioethics\, Clinical Center\, NIH & Former co-chair Brain Neuroethics Working Group\, NIH. \nTitle of Talk: Ethical Conundrums in Neuroscience Research \nDr. Grady is a nurse-bioethicist and a senior investigator who currently serves as the Chief of the Department of Bioethics. \nDr. Grady has published widely in the biomedical and bioethics literature and authored or edited several books\, including The Oxford Textbook of Clinical Research Ethics. \nShe served from 2010-2017 as a Commissioner on the President’s Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Her work is known internationally\, and she has lectured widely on ethical issues in clinical research and clinical care\, HIV disease\, and nursing. She is an elected fellow of the Hastings Center and of the American Academy of Nursing\, a senior research fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, and is the recipient of multiple awards. \nShe holds a BS in nursing and biology from Georgetown University\, a MSN. in community health nursing from Boston College\, and a PhD in philosophy from Georgetown University. \n\nThe School of Medicine of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. SUMMARY:Carolina Neuromuscular Disease Summit 2025
DESCRIPTION:Neuromuscular disorders can have a profound impact on individuals and their loved ones\, but many people are unaware of the challenges faced by those affected. Moreover\, there are numerous opportunities to improve care for these patients. \nThis activity offers the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding neuromuscular disorders. It will feature clinical experts discussing the state-of-the-science regarding clinical care of patients with neuromuscular disorders. Disease impact and the illness burden experienced by patients will be reviewed. Faculty will discuss best practices for evaluation of patients with a suspected neuromuscular disorder and keys to diagnosis. Focus will placed on sharing best management practices\, including the rationale underpinning and supporting data for evidence-based practice.

DESCRIPTION:The advent of Alzheimer treatments will change the trajectory of human aging.\nDennis J. Selkoe\, MD\nThe Vincent and Stella  Coates Professor of Neurologic Diseases\nHarvard Medical School\nCo-Director\, Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Disease\nBrigham and Women’s Hospital \nDennis Selkoe has devoted his career to the use of molecular approaches to study Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, Parkinson’s disease and related basic biological questions. Selkoe and coworkers broke new ground in 1982 when they developed a method to isolate the abnormal neurofibrillary tangles that are a hallmark of AD and then\, with other labs\, identified the microtubule-associated protein tau as the principal component of tangles. Selkoe then conducted extensive experiments on the amyloid ß-protein (Aß) and its precursor\, APP which led him to formulate the amyloid hypothesis. The lab showed that inherited mutations in APP\, and later the presenilin genes\, cause AD by increasing the generation of Aß. In 1999\, Selkoe and colleagues identified presenilin as the long-sought gamma-secretase that processes APP\, Notch and many other proteins. Recently\, the Selkoe lab conducted a series of studies showing that small\, soluble oligomers of Aß are responsible for synaptic injury and interfere with memory. These advances have led to numerous awards\, including the Potamkin Prize and the A.H. Heineken Price for Medicine. Selkoe is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. \nHosts: Drs.
