SUMMARY:Neurology Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:UNC Neurology is pleased to present the 2nd annual Neurology Day exhibiting neurology research\, collaboration and trainee showcase. \n\nAnnouncing Keynote Speaker: Michael Fox\, MD\, PhD\nMichael Fox\, MD\, PhD\nDr. Fox is the Founding Director of the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics and a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fox’s goal is to use research advances in brain imaging and neuromodulation technology to provide better treatments for his patients\, especially patients with symptoms that are refractory to medication.  He approaches both neurological and psychiatric symptoms as disorders of brain circuits\, and uses tools such as deep brain stimulation (DBS)\, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)\, and focused ultrasound (FUS) to target these circuits for symptom relief. \nDr. Fox’s clinical practice focuses on patients with medication-refractory neurological or psychiatric symptom that may benefit from neuromodulation therapy.  His practice includes deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease\, essential tremor\, and dystonia\, focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of tremor\, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of medication-refractory depression. \nDr Fox’s research focuses on developing new and improved treatments for brain disease based on understanding brain circuits and the effects of brain stimulation. He helped develop brain imaging techniques for visualizing human brain circuits\, and is a leader in applying these techniques towards improved neuromodulation therapies. He is the author of numerous highly cited articles in the fields of brain imaging and brain stimulation\, teaches courses on these topics\, and has won many awards for his work. \n\nWorking Agenda\n\n\n\n3PM\nWelcome & Oral Presentations\n\n\n3:45PM\nPoster Session 1\n\n\n4:45PM\nKeynote Speaker Presentation: Using Brain Connectivity to Guide Neuromodulation Treatments\n\n\n5:45PM\nPoster Session 2\n\n\n6:45PM\nAnnouncement of Awards & Closing\n\n\n\n\nCall for Abstracts\n\nWe welcome abstracts on all neurology-related research. Submissions should be concise and informative\, limited to a single PDF page. The format is flexible\, but the content must be clearly readable when printed on an A4 paper. Figures and tables are allowed as long as they fit within the page limit. \nTo submit your abstract\, please follow the link to our submission portal \nPlease ensure that your submission includes relevant details such as abstract title\, authors’ names\, and affiliations. SUMMARY:UNC Biochemistry & Biophysics Special Seminar
DESCRIPTION:“Regulation of Synaptic Development through L1-CAMs and Autism Risk Gene Ankyrin 2”\nPatricia F. Maness\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\nDepartment of Biochemistry and Biophysics \nPatricia F. Maness\, Ph.D.\, received her doctorate in Biochemistry in 1975 from the University of Texas. She was an Anna Fuller Fund Postdoctoral Fellow from 1978-1980 at the Rockefeller University in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Gerald M. Edelman\, and Assistant Professor. Since 1980 Dr. Maness has served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Chapel Hill for 45 years\, where she is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. She is a member of the UNC Neuroscience Center\, UNC Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities\, and UNC Curriculum in Neurobiology. Dr. Maness’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms governing development of the mammalian nervous system; specifically\, mechanisms of axon guidance and synaptogenesis and their disruption in neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism\, schizophrenia\, and intellectual disability. She has held continuous funding from NIH\, NSF\, NARSAD\, and other agencies. Dr. Maness has been a standing member of NIH Study Sections Neurology C and NDPR (Neurodifferentiation\, Plasticity and Regeneration)\, and served on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. Dr. Maness has received national recognition for her research\, including the Hilton Distinguished Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD)\, a Pogue Fellowship for Scholarly Research\, an NIH Career Development Award\, and the Jefferson-Pilot Award in Academic Research.

SUMMARY:2025 Annual Weatherspoon Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The tragic loss of Van and Kay’s son to a brain tumor at the age of 28 highlights the Weatherspoon family’s dedication to supporting brain tumor research. In response to this loss\, they have established multiple professorships and research funds at UNC Health\, contributing over $10 million over time\, particularly for the brain tumor program. The second Weatherspoon Brain Tumor Symposium is made possible by the generosity of the Weatherspoon funds. \nObjectives\n\nExplore key concepts in stem cell biology\, molecular genetics\, and immune factors influencing glioblastoma and other brain cancers\, and examine how these insights can drive therapeutic discovery and personalized treatment strategies.\nReview the latest advancements in immunotherapy (including CAR-T and NK cells)\, radiation therapy\, and novel treatments targeting tumor metabolism\, neurotransmitter receptors\, and epigenetic silencing\, with a focus on glioblastoma.\nExamine the role of tumor profiling\, biomarkers\, and advanced imaging techniques (e.g.\, perfusion imaging\, focused ultrasound) in optimizing patient care\, guiding treatment decisions\, and improving outcomes for brain tumor patients.\nDiscuss the holistic management of glioma patients\, including healthcare factors affecting patient experience\, the role of palliative care\, and the challenges in managing complications like venous thromboembolic disease
