{"id":12246,"date":"2021-12-02T18:28:07","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T23:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/?page_id=12246"},"modified":"2024-07-12T12:40:23","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T16:40:23","slug":"the-mentorship-process","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/faculty-development\/faculty-mentorship-program\/the-mentorship-process\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mentorship Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Establishing a Faculty Mentoring Committee<\/h2>\n<p>The creation of a mentoring committee is one of the early and important opportunities to take charge of one\u2019s career, as is the initiative with which one makes use of the committee.\u00a0 Faculty will begin assembling their committees as they begin their appointment in the department, under the approval of the Faculty Development Lead, Vinay Chaudhry, MD.<\/p>\n<p>The faculty member will propose two or more committee members from both the Department of Neurology and other appropriate departments from within or outside the institution. Ideally, there will be at least one mentor from outside of UNC Neurology. One person, typically the primary mentor, will serve as chair of the committee. The mentoring program coordinator (Dr. Chaudhry\u2019s assistant) will ask each of the committee candidates if they are willing to serve on the committee. Once the members have agreed to serve, they will receive information on committee composition, chair designation, goals of the program, and next steps.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"section-som\"><span>Frequently Asked Questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b74497dde\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"When putting together my committee, should I first reach out to potential mentors myself?\"    >When putting together my committee, should I first reach out to potential mentors myself?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b74497dde\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Yes, it is very appropriate to ask a prospective mentor if they are willing to do this. The department will subsequently send them a formal \u201cinvitation\u201d to be part of the committee, to recognize the mentor\u2019s role and reinforce its importance to us.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b74497fa6\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Must mentors hold higher ranks than the people they are mentoring?\"    >Must mentors hold higher ranks than the people they are mentoring?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b74497fa6\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">No, if their experience and expertise are appropriate to serve in a mentoring role for that faculty member.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b744980fe\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Mentors outside of the Department: how do mentees find them and what is their incentive for mentoring?\"    >Mentors outside of the Department: how do mentees find them and what is their incentive for mentoring?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b744980fe\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Often, appropriate mentors outside the department are easy to identify based on the mentee\u2019s work focus. If not, faculty should ask their division chief, vice chair for academic affairs or others (such as other collaborators) for recommendations. The likelihood of a positive response to a request for mentorship is high since mentoring is considered a fundamentally important academic activity by most UNC faculty.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b74498222\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Can the committee change over time?\"    >Can the committee change over time?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b74498222\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Yes. If the faculty member\u2019s focus changes, it may be appropriate to change the committee membership. To help with any changes needed, the mentoring program can communicate with the mentors involved in the change.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b74498358\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Who makes sure mentee assessments are completed?\"    >Who makes sure mentee assessments are completed?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b74498358\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">It is the faculty member\u2019s responsibility to organize the meetings and to define goals and supply them to the mentoring committee. The primary mentor is responsible for completing and submitting the assessment form annually. In many cases, it has worked well for the faculty member to draft the report and have it completed by the primary mentor after the meeting.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b74498460\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"How does the Chair\u2019s office use the reports?\"    >How does the Chair\u2019s office use the reports?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b74498460\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">The Faculty Mentoring Program is intended to support career development, and is not an evaluation. Annual mentoring reports are used by the Chair\u2019s office to help ensure that faculty are thriving and advancing in their chosen career goals, and to identify ways in which department administration can help. However, mentoring reports may in some cases be included or referenced in the required annual faculty review process (for example &#8211; to document the mentoring committee\u2019s discussions of advancement toward promotions).<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b7449866a\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Who decides how often the committee meets?\"    >Who decides how often the committee meets?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b7449866a\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">The mentoring committee and faculty member should meet at least twice a year but the frequency of meetings between primary mentor and faculty member will vary according to the needs and focus of the faculty member.<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69d5b7449895f\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"How can I arrange a mentoring meeting when my committee members are very busy, and some are at other institutions?\"    >How can I arrange a mentoring meeting when my committee members are very busy, and some are at other institutions?<\/span><div id=\"target-id69d5b7449895f\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Ideally, the committee will all meet together, either in person or virtually, but in some cases it may be necessary to have multiple meetings to get input from all.
