This can include physical abilities like walking or talking, as well as mental abilities like thinking and remembering.<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-1\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h3 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-1\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-1\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-1\">\n                Screening for post-ICU syndrome (PICS)            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h3>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p>Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) is a group of problems that people can experience after surviving a life-threatening illness and staying in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). These problems can include physical, mental, and emotional difficulties. Some common symptoms of PICS are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical: Muscle weakness, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Mental: Difficulty thinking, concentrating, and remembering.<\/li>\n<li>Emotional: Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These problems can affect a person&#8217;s ability to return to work, take care of themselves, and enjoy their daily life. While in residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she became interested in the long-term experience and care for patients who survived severe acute neurologic injuries including traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, anoxic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries. During fellowship at Harvard she trained with the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurorecovery Clinic. Dr. Carlson provides post-ICU clinical care and facilitates neurorecovery in her patients. She specializes in providing neurologically informed, personalized assessments of prognosis and recovery potential treatment of ongoing neurologic complications after acute neurologic injury. She assesses for post-ICU syndrome (PICS) in patients and families, poor recovery and secondary decline, goals of care and advance care planning, facilitation for return to work, and time limited trial of care follow-up.
