{"id":2298,"date":"2008-08-25T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-25T22:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/divisions\/movement-disorders\/npfcoe\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T10:24:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T15:24:48","slug":"npfcoe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/divisions\/movement-disorders\/movement-disorders-patients\/npfcoe\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary Parkinson&#8217;s Disease Clinic: Center of Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For over a decade, UNC Movement Disorders Center of Excellence has partnered with allied health therapists and others who specialize in Parkinson\u2019s to create an interdisciplinary team, to support the best outcomes and improve quality of life for people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The UNC Interdisciplinary Parkinson\u2019s Disease Clinic is a half-day clinic that provides individualized evaluations from five clinicians including a movement disorders specialist\/neurologist, a clinical social worker, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a speech therapist. (Note: For PCP referrals, we ask that neurology notes be sent as well.)<\/p>\n<p>If you are a physician and would like to refer a patient, please use this referral form. Please fax the referral form along with demographic and insurance information and recent neurology\/relevant notes to (984) 974-2285, <strong>ATTN: Maggie Ivancic<\/strong>. All patients referred to this specialty clinic will be screened first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please direct any questions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/people\/maggie-ivancic-msw-lcsw\/\">Interdisciplinary Parkinson Disease Clinic to the Center Coordinator, Maggie Ivancic, MSW, LCSW<\/a>,<\/strong> at (919)-843-2777 or <a href=\"mailto:mivancic@neurology.unc.edu\">mivancic@neurology.unc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div role=\"tablist\" class=\"panel-group yourcustomclass oscitas-bootstrap-container\" id=\"unc-accordion-0\">\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-0\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h3 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-0\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-0\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-0\">\n                What to expect during an appointment            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h3>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>Prior to your appointment, the social worker will complete a full clinical social work evaluation with you over the phone, and gather information about your history, concerns, goals, lifestyle, mood, etc. This information will be shared with the other clinicians involved to prepare them in advance for your appointment, so they can tailor their assessments and recommendations to you.<\/li>\n<li>On the evaluation day, you will come to the Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic for four hours, where you will receive four full evaluations: neurological, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language.<\/li>\n<li>You will leave at the end of the last evaluation with a packet of general information and resources. The interdisciplinary team will then meet to discuss your case and share their recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>The team\u2019s assessment and recommendations will be mailed to you within 3-4 weeks of the appointment. They will also be sent to your referring physician and any other physician or family member you may choose.<\/li>\n<li>After receiving our team\u2019s notes and recommendations, you will be contacted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/people\/maggie-ivancic-msw-lcsw\/\">Center Coordinator &amp; Clinical Social Worker, Maggie Ivancic<\/a>. If you live locally, you are welcome to return to see any of our therapists or return for a full evaluation after a year or two for comparison. We are happy to work with your referring primary care physician or neurologist in order to provide you with the best care possible.<\/p>\n<p>As a patient-centered clinic, we will provide thorough information on treatment options and recommendations, but it is up to the you and your family to decide upon what to pursue. We will put you in touch with our financial counselor before your appointment to help look into your insurance coverage and estimate out-of-pocket costs.<\/p>\n<p>The neurology appointment should cost the same as your usual neurology visits.<\/p>\n<p>Charges for each of the three allied health clinicians (PT, OT, SLP) reflect what regular evaluations by these clinicians would generally cost with your insurance. Our allied health clinicians are billed as outpatient, hospital-based. This means that if you have not met your deductible or your insurance does not cover \u201chospital-based\u201d rehabilitation, you may be responsible for the full charges involved with your visit.<\/p>\n<p>Also keep in mind that if you are currently doing outpatient rehabilitation at a different facility, home health rehabilitation, or are in an inpatient rehabilitation facility or under hospice care, insurance may not cover our clinic\u2019s rehabilitation appointments.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare typically covers 80% of outpatient, hospital-based rehabilitation therapies. For more information, please visit the Moving Day\u00ae website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movingdaynctriangle.org\">www.movingdaynctriangle.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>ParkNC: A Referral Network for Parkinson&#8217;s-trained Allied Health Clinicians<\/h3>\n<p>Aware that people with Parkinson\u2019s receive the highest quality of care and have the best health outcomes when they work with clinicians who are knowledgeable about this complex disease, the UNC Movement Disorders Center established www.ParkNC.org, a growing referral network for allied health clinicians (physical therapists, speech therapists, psychiatrists) who have received specialized training in Parkinson\u2019s disease. Physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and rehabilitation administrators are invited.
