This can make your body do things it doesn&#8217;t usually do, like twitch or jerk. Sometimes, you might lose balance or not respond. Seizures can occur due to a fever, infection, alcohol, drugs, certain medications, or other medical conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Seizures can be scary, but they usually don&#8217;t last long. If you see someone having a seizure, try to keep them safe by moving anything hard away from them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-1\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-1\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-1\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-1\">\n                What is epilepsy?            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nEpilepsy is a brain disorder that causes people to have repeated seizures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seizures happen when the brain&#8217;s normal electrical activity is suddenly disrupted.<\/li>\n<li>This can cause changes in how someone feels, acts, or moves.<\/li>\n<li>Seizures can vary from mild to severe and can affect different parts of the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-2\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-2\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-2\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-2\">\n                Seizure First Aide or what to do when a seizure occurs            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div>\n<p>When providing seizure first aid for generalized tonic clonic (grand mal) seizures, these are the key things to remember:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep calm and reassure other people who may be nearby.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t hold the person down or try to stop his movements.<\/li>\n<li>Time the seizure with your watch.<\/li>\n<li>Clear the area around the person of anything hard or sharp.<\/li>\n<li>Loosen ties or anything around the neck that may make breathing difficult.<\/li>\n<li>Put something flat and soft, like a folded jacket, under the head.<\/li>\n<li>Turn him or her gently onto one side. This will help keep the airway clear.<\/li>\n<li>Do not try to force the mouth open with any hard implement or with fingers. <b>A person having a seizure CANNOT swallow his tongue.<\/b> Efforts to hold the tongue down can injure teeth or jaw.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t attempt artificial respiration except in the unlikely event that a person does not start breathing again after the seizure has stopped.<\/li>\n<li>Stay with the person until the seizure ends naturally.<\/li>\n<li>Be friendly and reassuring as consciousness returns.<\/li>\n<li>Offer to call a taxi, friend or relative to help the person get home if he seems confused or unable to get home by himself.<\/li>\n<li>Call for Help &#8211; if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, call for emergency help (like 911).<br \/>\nIf the person is injured, call for emergency help.<br \/>\nIf you don&#8217;t know what to do, call for help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-3\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-3\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-3\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-3\">\n                When is an Emergency Room visit needed?            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-3\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div>\n<p>An uncomplicated, generalized, tonic clonic (grand mal) seizure in someone who has epilepsy is not a medical emergency even though it may look like one. The seizure will stop naturally after a few minutes without ill effects. The average person is able to continue about his business after a rest period, and may need only limited or no assistance in getting home.<\/p>\n<p>In other circumstances, an ambulance should be called. Also, when the following conditions exist, immediate medical attention is necessary: diabetes, brain infections, heat exhaustion, pregnancy, poisoning, hypoglycemia, high fever, and head injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>No Need to Call an Ambulance if:<br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A medical I.D. jewelry or card says &#8220;epilepsy,&#8221; and<\/li>\n<li>The seizure ends in under five minutes, and<\/li>\n<li>Consciousness returns without further incident, and<\/li>\n<li>There are no signs of injury, physical distress, or pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>An Ambulance Should Be Called if:<br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The seizure has happened in water.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s no medical I.D., and no way of knowing whether the seizure is caused by epilepsy.<\/li>\n<li>The person is pregnant, injured, or diabetic.<\/li>\n<li>The seizure continues for more than five minutes.<\/li>\n<li>A second seizure starts shortly after the first has ended.<\/li>\n<li>Consciousness does not start to return after the shaking has stopped.<\/li>\n<li>The person has been injured as a result of the seizure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the ambulance arrives after consciousness has returned, the person should be asked whether the seizure was associated with epilepsy and whether emergency room care is wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Please visit <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Epilepsy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epilepsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.epilepsy.com<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-4\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-4\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-4\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-4\">\n                What are the driving restrictions for seizures by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)?            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-4\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\">Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gyt13f\">Epilepsy Foundation website<\/a> to view driving laws by state.<\/p>\n<h3>North Carolina DMV Restrictions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has specific restrictions for drivers with seizures. Here&#8217;s a general overview:<\/li>\n<li>Seizure-Free Period: Generally, individuals must be seizure-free for 6-12 months before being considered for a driver&#8217;s license.<\/li>\n<li>Medical Evaluation: A thorough medical evaluation by a physician is required.
