Chapel Hill, <\/span>NC<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b> \u2013<\/span> On<\/span> March 28, 2023<\/span>, <\/span>UNC<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> MS\/Neuroimmunology Division<\/span>, a leading provider of care for people living with <\/span>multiple sclerosis<\/span> (MS)<\/span>,<\/span> has been officially recognized as <\/span>a <\/span>Center for <\/span>Comprehensive<\/span> MS Care through the <\/span><\/span>National Multiple Sclerosis Society\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/a> Partners in MS Care program<\/span>.\u00a0 This formal recognition honors <\/span>the UNC MS\/Neuroimmunology Division\u2019s<\/span> commitment to high-quality MS care<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span> The <\/span>Comprehensive MS Care Center distinction is appointed by a local and national committee, and the organization must demonstrate a coordinated, multi-disciplinary care for MS.\u00a0 <\/span>C<\/span>linicians <\/span>at UNC\u2019s MS\/Neuroimmunology Division<\/span> (Neurology Clinic in <\/span>Chapel Hill<\/span> and The Bodford Family Transverse Myelitis Center in Hillsborough)<\/span> continually <\/span>demonstrate <\/span>a wealth of <\/span>knowledge<\/span>, <\/span>experience<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> the <\/span>important<\/span> attention to detail <\/span>necessary in treating <\/span>people living with <\/span>MS<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the outstanding achievements of\u00a0<\/span> the <\/span>UNC Department of Neurology\u201d<\/span>, said Dr. Gwenn Garden, Chair, UNC School of Medicine Department of Neurology. \u201cWe a<\/span>cknowledge the <\/span>tremendous <\/span>support from the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals,<\/span> and<\/span> a<\/span> fruitful collaboration with <\/span>other UNC <\/span>d<\/span>epartments <\/span>(Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Urology, Psychiatry, Pain Medicine, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Radiology, and others)\u00a0 in providing state-of- the- art comprehensive care to people with MS and related disorders\u201d, Dr. Garden said.\u201cMS is a very complex and heterogenous disease<\/span>, a disease with many faces<\/span>\u201d, said Dr. Irena Dujmovic Basuroski, UNC MS\/Neuroimmunology Division Chief. <\/span>\u201cChildren and adults <\/span>with MS are living under pressure of <\/span>psysical<\/span>, <\/span>c<\/span>ognitive and emotional symptoms<\/span> and<\/span> MS significantly impacts their quality of life<\/span>. <\/span>UNCMS\/Neuroimmunology Division is dedicated to excellence in <\/span>providing the<\/span> individualized, comprehensive and patient-centered care and we highly <\/span>value<\/span> our<\/span> continued <\/span>partnership with the National MS Society <\/span>in <\/span>this journey\u201d, Dr. Dujmovic Basuroski concluded<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About Multiple Sclerosis\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS <\/span>is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms vary from person to person and range from numbness and tingling, to walking difficulties, fatigue, dizziness, pain, depression, blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. A study led by the National MS Society estimates that nearly 1 million people are living with MS in the United States; twice as many than previously thought.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
