Howard Jr, MD <\/strong>and<strong> Manisha Chopra, MBBS <\/strong>led a groundbreaking rCART trial (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laneur\/article\/PIIS1474-4422(23)00194-1\/fulltext\">Granit et al., Lancet Neurology<\/a>) and their 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0FDA approved drug for treating myasthenia gravis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laneur\/article\/PIIS1474-4422(23)00080-7\/fulltext\">Howard et al., Lancet Neurology<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucb.com\/stories-media\/Press-Releases\/article\/UCB-announces-US-FDA-approval-of-ZILBRYSQR-zilucoplan-for-the-treatment-of-adults-with-generalized-myasthenia-gravis\">press release<\/a>). <strong>Senyene E. Hunter, MD, PhD, <\/strong>received an NINDS Child Neurologist K12 award. <strong>David Y. Hwang, MD\u00a0<\/strong>received the Neurocritical Care Foundation INCLINE award and a joint Duke-UNC NIH U24 Center grant to advance acute stroke research. <strong>Rick B. Meeker, PhD<\/strong> and <strong>Monica M. Diaz, MD<\/strong> received an NIA-funded award for an HIV neuroprotection trial. <strong>Soma Sengupta, MD, PhD<\/strong> advanced glioblastoma treatment (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37137304\/\">Ranjan, et al., Cell Reports Medicine<\/a>), initiated the Imvax trial for glioblastoma, and received the American Brain Tumor Association discovery grant. <strong>Miriam Sklerov, MD <\/strong>received an NIH K23 award to study brain stimulation in apathy and received the UNC James Woods Junior Faculty Award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Basic Research: <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Todd J. Cohen, PhD<\/strong> developed a new mouse model of frontotemporal dementia that is more physiologically relevant to human disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/articles\/85921\">Necarsulmer et al., eLife<\/a>). <strong>Gwenn A. Garden, MD, PhD<\/strong> identified miR-155 as a novel modulator of microglia A\u03b2 internalization and synaptic pruning for AD pathology (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12974-023-02745-6\">Aloi et al., Journal of Neuroinflammation<\/a>). <strong>Sung-Ho Lee, DVM, PhD<\/strong> received an NSF grant to develop MRI-compatible electrodes for deep brain stimulation and recording. <strong>Ian Shih, PhD<\/strong> examined the neuromodulatory effects of the anterior insular cortex on the brain default mode network (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-36616-8\">Menon et al., Nature<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-36616-8\">Communications<\/a>), revealed neural dynamics between the default mode and salience network switching (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ade5732\">Chao et al., Science Advances<\/a>), contributed to a multi-center rodent fMRI study (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41593-023-01286-8\">Grandjean et al., Nature Neuroscience<\/a>), received two NIH R01 and three R21 awards, and completed the installation of a new 9.4T MRI system supported by an NIH high-end instrumentation award. <strong>Weiting Zhang, MD, PhD<\/strong> received an NINDS R21 award to study functional connectivity in the striatum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Clinical Research: Irena Dujmovic Basuroski, MD led the UNC MS center to Comprehensive Care recognition.
