{"id":22249,"date":"2025-12-09T15:06:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T20:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/?p=22249"},"modified":"2025-12-09T15:06:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T20:06:23","slug":"stroke-care-neurorecovery-clinic-research-publications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/stroke-care-neurorecovery-clinic-research-publications\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC Neurology Researchers Publish Two Studies Advancing Stroke and Neurocritical Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chapel Hill, N.C.<\/strong> \u2014 Researchers from UNC Neurology have published two studies that address critical questions in stroke management and post-neurocritical care, offering insights that could reshape clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Study 1: Rethinking ICU Admission After Mechanical Thrombectomy<\/h2>\n<p>The first study, <em>\u201cResource Utilization After Mechanical Thrombectomy: Is ICU Care Required for All Patients?\u201d<\/em> (Krawchuk LJ, Crooks AM, Do RK, Powers WJ, Ho JP, Williams DM, 2025), examined whether patients who undergo mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) without intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) truly require intensive care unit (ICU) admission post-procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing data from 239 patients treated between 2015 and 2022, researchers found that <strong>more than half (53.6%) did not require ICU-level resources within the first 24 hours<\/strong>. The most common interventions among those who did were vasoactive infusions and advanced respiratory support.
