Howard, Jr., MD<\/strong>, will enter phased retirement beginning July 1. Fortunately for us, he will remain active with his research projects and EMG\/neuromuscular education. We are excited to announce that <strong>Rebecca Traub, MD,<\/strong> will become the new director of the EMG laboratory. The award recognizes the hospital\u2019s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. The Center also received the association\u2019s highest recognition \u2013 the Target: Stroke<sup>SM<\/sup> Elite Plus award. <a href=\"https:\/\/unc.live\/2Lral7s\">Learn more &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Drs. Nina Browner, James Howard, Daniel Roque, Miriam Sklerov<\/strong> and <strong>Rebecca Traub<\/strong> were recipients of the 2019 UNC Health Care and UNC Faculty Physicians Award for Carolina Care Excellence. Howard, Jr., MD, <\/strong>titled, \u201cMyasthenia gravis: the role of complement at the neuromuscular junction\u201d is one of the <em>Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences&#8217;<\/em> most downloaded recent papers (1\/2017 &#8211; 12\/2018).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #007fae;\">Research<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/716\/2019\/06\/NC-Tracs.jpg\" alt=\"NC Tracs\" width=\"200\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/716\/2019\/06\/NC-Tracs.jpg 518w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/716\/2019\/06\/NC-Tracs-300x272.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Drs. Xiaopeng Zong (PI), <strong>William Powers<\/strong> (co-PI), and John Buse recently received a $34,700 grant award from the\u00a0North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute\u00a0and the UNC Dept. of Neurology. The researchers will investigate a new MRI method developed by Dr. Zong to see if it can be used to study tiny brain arteries in patients with diabetes who are at high risk to develop strokes from disease of these arteries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane Fan, MD,<\/strong> was recently funded with a R21 grant, \u201cICT (Idiographic Clinical Trial) for rare diseases\u201d from NCATS\/NIH. They discussed the importance of screening for depression, anxiety and other mental health issues among Parkinson\u2019s patients as well as recognizing and overcoming barriers to quality mental health care, including stigma. The program was an opportunity for patients and families impacted by the rare atypical Parkinsonism diagnoses of progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and multiple system atrophy to learn about symptoms and treatment options, tap into local and national resources, and form meaningful, supportive connections.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the UNC Movement Disorders Center hosted \u201cPD 301: An Overview of Advanced Stage Parkinson\u2019s\u201d in May.
