This method uniquely provides adaptive, individualized stimulation. Called \u201cfeedback transcranial alternating current stimulation,\u201d it manipulates brain activity through a weak electric current, not detectable by the patient, applied to the scalp in response to pathological brain-activity signals measured by a standard electroencephalogram (EEG).<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"102\" height=\"128\" class=\"image-left size-full wp-image-2571\" title=\"Dr. Thomas Kash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/782\/2018\/07\/Kash.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Thomas Kash\" \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.unc.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ze5-qtdn7USAbAvThA1zVUEca0zeJtEIHFcrbCNWukMyhNuA_rR2Y3B4Jf1Xpx5l32yB7PKr770.&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.med.unc.edu%2fpharm%2fpeople%2fprimaryfaculty%2fthomas-kash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Thomas Kash, Ph.D.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, will explore the effect of the brain chemical dynorphin and its receptor, kappa opioid receptor (KOR), on the neurotransmitter glutamate and anxiety-like behavior. Stuber, Ph.D.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will examine circuit connectivity within the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), a component of the amygdala, the brain\u2019s center for fear-related illnesses such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
