{"id":3087,"date":"2017-07-14T19:09:04","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T23:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/hiroyuki-kato-publishes-in-neuron\/"},"modified":"2018-07-05T13:45:53","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T17:45:53","slug":"hiroyuki-kato-publishes-in-neuron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/hiroyuki-kato-publishes-in-neuron\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiroyuki Kato Publishes in Neuron"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><!-- description --><\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">In the study published July 6th in the journal Neuron titled, \u201cNetwork-level Control of Frequency Tuning in Auditory Complex\u201d, Kato et al. found a neuronal network basis for how our brain precisely represents the external world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3088\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/782\/2018\/07\/hiroyuki-kato-publishes-in-neuron-image2-251x300.jpeg\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Hiroyuki Kato, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging and whole-cell recordings in the mouse auditory cortex, they found that lateral inhibition, a fundamental circuit operation that sharpens the tuning properties of neurons, is mediated by the regulation of reverberating recurrent circuits. This finding revises the classical model of lateral inhibition, and points to the importance of considering the whole network in the circuit model of healthy and diseased brains.<\/p>\n<p>To read the
