{"id":3138,"date":"2014-12-08T15:55:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T20:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/philpot-and-zylka-labs-pinpoint-chemo-effect-on-brain-cells\/"},"modified":"2018-07-05T14:19:05","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T18:19:05","slug":"philpot-and-zylka-labs-pinpoint-chemo-effect-on-brain-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neuroscience\/philpot-and-zylka-labs-pinpoint-chemo-effect-on-brain-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Philpot and Zylka Labs pinpoint chemo effect on brain cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Ben Philpot, PhD, and Mark Zylka, PhD, discovered a biochemical mechanism that could cause &#8220;chemo brain&#8221;, the neurological side effects of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ben Philpot and Mark Zylka have discovered a biochemical mechanism that could be the cause of the neurological side effects of chemotherapy, including memory loss, confusion, difficulty thinking, and trouble concentrating.<\/p>\n<p>Their research, found in <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Topoisomerase 1 inhibition reversibly impairs synaptic function\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/111\/48\/17290.abstract\" target=\"_self\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a> and recently feature in the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"Could autism and \" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/2015\/02\/08\/4532725_could-autism-and-chemo-brain-share.html?rh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News and Observer<\/a>, shows how the drug topotecan, commonly used in chemotherapy, can drastically suppress the expression of Topoisomerase-1, a gene that triggers the creation of proteins essential for normal brain functions. While the drug is present in the cells, they are in a dormant state; however, after the drug is eliminated, the synaptic function returned to normal.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the chemotherapy implications, they suggest that if these enzymes are affected during brain development, the result could be long-term neurodevelopmental problems, such as those found in people with Autism Spectrum
