What’s new in the Department of Neurosurgery

New Division, Faculty & Residents

We are pleased to announce the first division to be created within the Department of Neurosurgery – the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery – with the coming arrival of Carolyn Quinsey MD as its newest member. Dr. Quinsey, a recent graduate from the Neurosurgery Residency Program, will join the Department of Neurosurgery in September 2017 after completing her Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Research, Grants and Publications

Matt Ewend, MD, FACS is part of a UNC team whose groundbreaking research, Tumor-homing cytotoxic human induced neural stem cells for cancer therapy, was the cover story in Science Translational Medicine in February.

Dr. Kathleen Bradford has developed a Quality Improvement website for the Neurosurgery department. The site includes key quality and safety publications, educational resources, guidelines, and departmental news.

Dr. Michael Catalino is developing a website that will share neurosurgery research resources. If you know of people and/or organizations who can assist in our research efforts, please fill out a survey. In the future, the site will be expanded to include the Department of Neurology.


Presentations, Honors and Awards

Matt Ewend, MD, FACS, was named President of UNC Physicians. In this role, Ewend will oversee the physician clinical enterprise of UNC Health Care. Read an outline of the goals he hopes to achieve while serving as president.

Neil Martin, M.D., former chair of neurosurgery at UCLA, was the guest speaker at the third annual Robert H. Wilkins, M.D. Lectureship in Academic Neurosurgery sponsored jointly by the UNC and Duke Neurosurgery Departments in February.

Deb Bhowmick, MD was named an Associate Editor for the newly formed Operative Neurosurgery Editorial Review Board. Matt Ewend, MD, FACS is the General Section Editor.

Kevin Carneiro, DO presented at the Matthew Gfeller Center’s Neurotrauma Symposium in March.

Mark Vavrousek, IT Manager for Neurology, Neurosurgery and Urology, was one of six recipients to receive a university-wide annual award last October for outstanding information technology support.


Outreach & Other News

Run or walk in our Head for the Cure 5K fundraiser on Sunday, April 30th. Register or donate today!

Also, head over to Four Corners Grill for lunch or dinner on Friday, March 31st. The restaurant is generously donating a portion of the days sales to our Head for the Cure event! There is nearby parking available in the Wallace Parking Deck at 150 E. Rosemary Street.

The Tar Heel Voices sang in the UNC pit on February 24th to help round up participants and support for UNC Neurosurgery’s Head for the Cure 5k Run/Walk. Special thanks to Casey Hribar, a former member of the group, for making this happen.
