Neurosurgery Residency Rotation in Asheville, NC
During the sixth year of neurosurgery residency at UNC, residents will have the option of rotating at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Residents will work with 6 neurosurgeons and 2 orthopedic spine surgeons at Carolina Spine and Neurosurgery Center, which operates at and provides coverage for Mission Memorial, an HCA-owned hospital. Mission Memorial is a level 2 Trauma Center with 815 licensed beds. The Asheville rotation will provide exposure to private practice neurosurgery, but there is no lack of diverse pathology that is treated at Mission, because it is the largest hospital covering Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Residents can expect to gain in-depth exposure to minimally invasive spine surgery, general spine surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, spine and cranial trauma, brain tumors, and endovascular training as desired.
Outside of the hospital, residents can enjoy all that Asheville has to offer. An eclectic mountain vacation destination, downtown Asheville is just minutes away from the Blue Ridge Parkway and world-class hiking. In close proximity are a number of smaller mountain town destinations and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offering hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, and any number of outdoor activities. Asheville also has a strong art scene in addition to a thriving microbrewery culture, claiming to have the greatest number of breweries and distilleries per capita in the world.
Paid housing in a two bedroom apartment just minutes from the hospital is available for residents so that family and children can join in on the rotation given the distance from Chapel Hill.
