Dr. Africk received her Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1985. She continued on to earn her medical degree from Loyola University Chicago-Stritch School of Medicine in 1989. Dr. Africk completed her internship in General Surgery from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1990, and returned to UCLA to complete a pre-residency clinical research fellowship in neurosurgery in 1992. She completed her residency in neurosurgery in 1997 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, Illinois.
Dr. Africk has over 18 years experience in spinal and brain tumor surgery. She manages patients with neurotrauma including brain and spinal injuries and also treats hydrocephalus. Dr. Africk also operates on carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes.
Dr. Africk received board certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2000 and board recertification in 2010. She is a member of the Spine, Trauma and Women in Neurosurgery sections of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Prior to her relocation to North Carolina, Dr. Africk was President of the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society. She has served in the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies for 3 years.
