Michael Y. Lee, MD, MHA

Michael Lee.jpgDr. Lee is Founding Chair and Professor of UNC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Additionally, he is Medical Director of the UNC Health Care Rehabilitation Center, and Physical and Occupational Therapy. He established the fully-accredited UNC Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which recently received a five-year re-accreditation. He holds board certifications in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

After finishing undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in chemistry, he completed medical school at the University of Illinois, and residency at Northwestern University School of Medicine/Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He also received his master of health care administration from the UNC School of Public Health and was an administrative fellow with the American Council on Education (ACE). Dr. Lee has been selected as a Best Doctor in America and one of America’s Top Physicians for multiple years.

In addition to musculoskeletal and spine rehabilitation medicine, his sub-specialties include spinal cord injury rehabilitation, botulinum toxin injections, spine injections, nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), nerve blocks and botulinum toxin injections.

Dr. Lee has been involved in numerous research projects and clinical trials, most recently in spasticity and pressure ulcers in rehabilitation patients. He has written and presented many journal articles in the field, both nationally and internationally, most recently in regard to stroke, amputee and burn patients. He has served in various leadership roles for national rehabilitation organizations, including his current role on the Practice Committee for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and as a former resources chair for the Chair’s Council, Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Dr. Lee is married to Dr. Christine Lee and they have three children. He enjoys playing golf and attending performing arts events.
