The Gfeller Center
UNC Hospitals is a Level I trauma center, and the members of the UNC Department of Neurosurgery and the staff of the UNC Neuroscience ICU are aware of the devastating impacts that serious head injury can have on patients in our state. In addition to the outstanding state-of-the-art care provided to patients within the Neuroscience ICU, UNC Neurosurgery is proud to be associated with the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center at UNC.
The Gfeller Center is lead by Dr. Kevin M. Guskiewicz. Dr. Guskiewicz is a 2011 MacArthur Fellow and an internationally known expert in sport-related head injury. He and his team have made UNC one of the key centers in the country for sport-related head injury and concussion. In addition, UNC plays a prominent role in the treatment of retired athletes who are being followed for long-term effects of head injury. The Gfeller Center website highlights the exciting research happening at UNC Chapel Hill relative to this important public health concern.
