Dr. Matthew Ewend is the Chief Clinical Officer of UNC Health, President of UNC Physicians, and the first Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery (2010-2018). He joined the faculty in 1997 after completing medical school, neurosurgery residency, and a brain tumor fellowship at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Ewend\u2019s clinical interests center on endoscopic and minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors, especially pituitary tumors, skull base tumors, and metastases. He is active in the treatment of adults with hydrocephalus and in the CyberKnife Program.<\/p>\n

In his system leadership role, he oversees all physician practices at UNC Physicians, the quality program for UNC Health, the population health program, and the partnership between UNC Physicians and our system hospitals.<\/p>\n

When asked about his goals for a new patient visit, Dr. Ewend says,\u00a0\u201cMy first goal is to build a strong relationship with my patient and his or her family. In addition to a thoughtful review of their case, patients can expect an understandable explanation of their condition, discussion of all the treatment options, and my opinion as to which option(s) might be best. At UNC, we work in teams to bring you the best care. If needed, I will help you to assemble this team. I pride myself on making the issues of neurosurgery easy to understand for my patients. After all, it isn\u2019t really rocket science. I look forward to meeting you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Ewend has been named to Castle-Connolly\u2019s Top Doctor List for 20 consecutive years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
