On August 29, Dr. Robert “Bob” Strauss was named as the first Cefalo-Bowes Distinguished Professor.

The Distinguished Professorship was established to recognize and honor the contributions of Robert C. Cefalo, MD and Watson Bowes, Jr. MD. Dr. Cefalo and Dr. Bowes left a large footprint both in academic and clinical medicine in the field of maternal-fetal medicine.

During his nearly three decades of leadership at UNC, Dr. Cefalo improved the care of mothers and their infants throughout our region though his compassionate obstetrical care. “Bob Cefalo was part of the fabric of UNC School of Medicine. Serving as director of the maternal-fetal medicine division as well as interim chair on two occasions.” said Dr. Daniel Clarke-Pearson, chair of UNC Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Cefalo passed away in April of 2008.

Dr. Watson Bowes is an emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynecology who joined the UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the early 1980s. While here at UNC, Dr. Bowes was a of the co-creators of our perinatal data system which became a state-wide model. Like Dr. Cefalo, Dr. Bowes is known for his instrumental role in medical education at UNC.
