Meet Dr. Bernard

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Leawood, Kansas which is a suburb outside of Kansas City. My childhood home was 0.6 miles from the stateline. One of my favorite activities is to ask people to find Kansas on a map.
Where did you go to medical school?
I went to medical school at The University of Kansas School of Medicine. My grandfather and mother both graduated from there as well.
What inspired you to be an OBGYN?
My grandfather is a retired OBGYN so I grew up hearing stories of his profession and was impressed with how fondly he spoke of his career and his patients. As I went through medical school I realized it was the perfect specialty for me with the fast paced environment, the variety within the field, and the opportunity to be involved in some of the most meaningful, memorable, and cherised parts of families lives. I am frequently reminded of how this profession is a privilege.
Why did you choose UNC ?
I chose UNC because of the environment. I knew that OBGYN residency was not going to be easy. It was going to be full of long days and I was going to be working harder than I have ever worked before. I knew that some days would be good, filled with successes and evidence of improvement, while other days would be worse, with a poor patient outcome or a mistake turned learned opportunity. I chose UNC because of those bad days. I wanted to be in an environment that, when I was down, would build me up, support me, and push me to be a better physician.
What you are most excited about during residency?
Roasting my upper levels!
