Resident – Class of 2022

Meet Dr. Appiagyei

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Toronto, Canada but mostly grew up in Ghana, West Africa.
Where did you go to medical school?
University of North Carolina
What inspired you to be an OBGYN?
Between college and medical school, I obtained my MPH with a concentration in Global Health. I worked in Southern and Eastern Africa for three years on my a variety of programs developing interventions for HIV positive women in pregnancy and on expanding access to Long Acting Reversible Contraception. This solidified my interst in complex issues in pregnancy and my passion for working with women in marginalized communities.
Why did you choose UNC ?
Having been a medical student here, I was fortunate to experience what an amazing program this was before applying to residency. Ultimately, the collegiality among faculty, residents and staff is what won me over, in addition to the breadth of global health opportunities.
What you are most excited about during residency?
Having the opportunity to learn from and provide care to a diverse group of women who come to us from all over the state of North Carolina.
