Resident – Class of 2022

Meet Dr. Recknagel

Where did you grow up?
Saline, Michigan
Where did you go to medical school?
Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
What inspired you to be an OBGYN?
My interest in human health comes primarily from my belief that one of the most significant effects of illness is a loss of self-determination. From promoting access to effective contraception, ensuring that birth and pregnancy is a safe and joyful experience, and even fighting with patients against GYN cancers–I found few other fields as committed to empowering their patients as OBGYN.
Why did you choose UNC ?
The most important factor in choosing a residency is finding group of residents and faculty who will support you through four difficult years. I’m a long way from Michigan, but I always call to mind Coach Bo Schembechler’s famous words when I think about the culture here: “No [one] is more important than The Team. No coach is more important than The Team. The Team, The Team, The Team…We’re gonna believe in each other, we’re not gonna criticize each other, we’re not gonna talk about each other, we’re gonna encourage each other.”
What you are most excited about during residency?
My favorite part of residency is the continuous progress. It’s amazing to look back every so often and recognize that you have become a better surgeon, a better counselor, a better doctor than you were last month.
