Meet Dr. Sakai

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Japan, but grew up mostly in Pittsburgh, PA.

Where did you go to medical school?
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

What inspired you to be an OBGYN?
I really love that within medicine, OBGYN affords an additional level of working with patients through some of the best and worst times in their lives. I did an acting internship in urogynecology as a medical student, which helped me realize how much we can help women through issues that can be very stigmatizing and isolating, and how privileged we are to be privy to information that patients may not feel comfortable sharing with other providers. I also love that we are able to provide both ambulatory and surgical care for our patients!

Why did you choose UNC ?
I fell in love with this program on interview day. There is a palpable and genuine camaraderie and respect amongst residents, faculty, and staff that I could sense within a few minutes. This is matched by a wealth of expertise from generalists to subspecialists and excellent surgical training.

What you are most excited about during residency?
I’m excited to continue developing my surgical skills and learning from my extraordinary and inspirational co-residents.
